Girls State; looking for a few good candidates - By Dave Tanguay

(This is the second in a series of articles on Boys and Girls state for 2014.)

Attention all junior girls in the Windham-Raymond High School, private schools and those home schooled in the Windham area. Girls State convention is to be held again this year at Husson College from June 15th to the 20th and is a great opportunity for motivated young women to immerse themselves in a week of comradeship and political process.

Want to be a delegate? Here’s how:

Junior girls interested in attending Dirigo Girls State can make their intentions know by submitting their names to their school’s guidance office or contacting the Legion Post Americanism Officer, Dennis Marshall at 207-627-1014 by the first of April. For those in public or private school, your school guidance office will review the list for eligibility and forward names to the American Legion Post with a priority recommendation (primary, alternate). The Post will then review the list, make selections, and notify the candidates as to status. Those not selected may be listed as alternates. The Field-Allen Post funded three candidates last year and is hoping to do that again this year. Those selected will have to file appropriate registration forms for submission prior to the 15th of April. Forms not submitted by that date or incomplete forms submitted after that date may not be considered.

Selected candidates will have their convention delegate cost paid for by the American Legion Post. Candidates will, however, be responsible for their own transportation to Husson University in Bangor. For further information, contact your guidance officer or Dennis Marshal at 207-627-1014.

Future articles will address: Boys State and how local business can support or sponsor candidates.
