Dirigo Boys State and Girls State 2018: A week that can shape a lifetime by Dave Tanguay

Last year, American Legion Field-Allen Post and American Region Auxiliary, Unit 148 of Windham, sent four juniors from Windham High School to the state conventions. The Post and Auxiliary are once again looking for highly motivated juniors to attend the 71st Dirigo Boys or Girls State to be held on June 17 to June 21, 2018.

The state conventions provide opportunities for Maine juniors to participate in programs that supplement high school courses and provide a better understanding of the process and responsibilities of government.

This year’s emphasis will be the interaction between government and the business community.
Attendees role-play as they learn to campaign for various state positions and organize and carry out the functions of government. This is an amazing opportunity for our youth to learn how government works.

Sponsorship is through the American Legion, Department of Maine, with the local Field-Allen Legion community providing financial support. There is no direct cost to the participants who are selected for the programs, beyond the transportation cost to the respective colleges.

Organizations or business wishing to sponsor a student may do so by contacting Field-Allen Post Financial Officer, Dave Tanguay (892-1306) for details. Full or partial sponsorships are welcome.
More information will be available soon at the Windham High School Guidance Office or through your local American Legion Post Commander, Mel Greenier at 892-7449 or the Youth Programs Officer, Wally Clark at 301-318-5299.
