One Act performers head to state competition - By Michelle Libby

On March 21, the Windham High School will take the stage for their performance of The Chronicles of Jane, Book Seven for the One Act Drama Festival in Bangor. They will compete against powerhouse schools Camden, Fryeburg, Skowhegan, Bangor, Cape Elizabeth and Waterville. They took home the title co-winner last weekend for the regional competition which qualified the cast and crew of 38 for states.

“We knew we had a strong show going in, but it all depends on the judges. Each judge has their own opinions on what makes a strong show,” said director Rob Juergens.

The Chronicles of Jane, Book Seven is the one of the stories in Jane’s life. This one is The Term Paper. Jane is played by Emily Algeo. Norman is Will Wheaton and the Nymphs of Slumber are Jen Bernier, Anna Giroux and Libby McBride. All five of them were acknowledged by being named to the All Festival Cast.

Synopsis of the beginning of the book: “To tell her story really means to act it out. Jane declares that she needs a proxy, someone in the cast to play the part of her. Norman is the character who is reluctantly thrust into this role.

Once Mrs. Spector assigns the term paper and identifies its strict criteria, Jane begins writing it on her computer.  She gets started and immediately has to deal with obstacles like needing and wanting sleep, dissatisfaction with the first words she has typed, coming up with ideas for her text and then rejecting them.”

Procrastination becomes one of the problems she has to deal with along with sleep and anxieties about the paper. She also spends some time under the ocean with sharks who ask her “Where is your paper?” prompting her to wake up.

However, that’s not the end of the story, and why ruin the surprise. Head to Bangor to support the cast on March 21 at 2:30 p.m. For more information about the festival, visit https://sites.google.com/site/medramacouncil/
