Annual Windham Alumni banquet packs middle school cafeteria - By Walter Lunt

Over 230 attended the 2015 Windham Alumni Banquet Saturday at Windham Middle School. Association president Sam Simonson recognized the class of 1965 at the head tables, celebrating their 50th anniversary year. Class president Bill Reynolds compared the small size of their class with today’s senior classes and how limited the competitive sports options were 50 years ago. Class member Carol Taylor reminded attendees that the class of ’65 was the first to graduate from the school’s current Route 202 location.

Recognized as this year’s alumni honoree was former graduate and later Windham High School earth science and biology teacher Bob Hunt (1953 – 1983). Hunt reminisced about establishing one of the first high school science labs in the state and joked about how the school committee turned down his request for $25 to create a pond for biological studies.

Simonson also acknowledged five members of the class of 1942, the most senior class attending the event.

The Association awards two scholarships each year to Windham High School seniors, supported in part by raffles held at the banquet. Several attendees won items donated by local businesses and residents.
A meal of chicken and vegetables was prepared by middle school staff and served by the North Windham Union Church Youth Group.

The current slate of officers were re-elected for another year: Sam Simonson (’67), president; Stephanie Bubier (’67), vice president; Tammy Haskell (’82), treasurer; and Susan Simonson (’71), secretary.
