AUGUSTA – Sen. Bill Diamond, D-Windham, is reminding
Maine residents and visitors start planning for upcoming fall foliage
sightseeing opportunities.
Peak foliage conditions generally appear first in far
Northern Maine around the last week in September and work their way south
through mid- to late-October. The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and
Forestry provides weekly foliage reports and observations throughout the season
to help residents and visitors plan their sightseeing excursions.
“Maine is beautiful year-round, but especially in the
fall,” Sen. Diamond said. “The foliage around Lake Sebago is awe-inspiring, and
I encourage everyone to consult the website and make the most of this
opportunity.”
The Department began its weekly updates, available
at www.mainefoliage.com, on
September 14th. State officials say conditions should arrive right on schedule
this year. Foliage updates can be found on Twitter under @MaineFoliage.
Fall in the lakes region is full of adventures, from
boating to leave peeping and migration outings to see birds coming and leaving
their fall home. There is wine tasting at local shops and wineries. Shopping is
excellent for Maine treats to take home. Deals abound for early holiday
shopping.
Local theaters are performing their fall productions.
Trips to places like Raymond Beach or Hacker’s Hill
provide excellent views of the foliage. Getting to Babb’s Bridge might be more
difficult with construction and repairs happening this fall, but try visiting
Gambo Dam off River Road near the soccer field. There is a great hiking trail
and a lot of wildlife to observe.
