Look out Windham and Raymond there’s a new donut in town! Every morning, well – weekday morning, I drive myself to school in Raymond. I eat breakfast at home and stop for an iced coffee en route to school. One day, however, upon picking up my coffee and resuming my drive, my eyes caught something – a new donut shop! The Village Donut Shop and Bakery had appeared seemingly overnight. My car made me stop.
I walked into the newly remodeled interior to see a very neat and orderly display. A half wall of donuts and a counter covered in baked yummies. I decided that not only would I try their donuts, but I would buy some for some friends at work and get their feedback. It is always nice to share in a new experience, right? I ordered a dozen donuts of all different kinds. The woman behind the counter was kind, helpful and patient. After paying for my reasonably priced ($7.50 at that point) dozen of donuts, I made my way back to my car and drove to school itching to open the box. They smelled divine. This made it even more difficult to wait.
Upon my arrival at school, I placed the box of donuts on a counter in my room and left them there until my friends (the other interventionists that I work with) showed up. Once they had arrived the donuts were fair game! Now, to put into perspective, I like my donuts – and yes, this is the heavy guy talking donuts. I have tried many donuts in my life from chain stores and from local bakeries. These were some of the best I’ve had in a while. They were not grease-laden like some that I have had recently. With the cake donuts, the outsides were golden brown and crispy and the insides were light and fluffy. With the raised donuts it was like a pocket of delectable air. I really enjoyed the cinnamon sugar donut, personally.
The folks that shared in my tasting all agreed that these donuts were pretty fantastic. You know the food is good when people are quiet, right? While enjoying these pillows of confection, not a peep was made. Once finished, nothing could be heard but praise for the Village Donut Shop and Bakery.
I stopped again a few days later to pick up another half dozen to help celebrate my recent completion of a graduate school course in which I had received an “A”. I got myself a raspberry bear claw and the donuts for the other folks I work with. The bear claw was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The raspberry filling was not too sweet and tasted extremely fresh and the exterior was perfectly cooked and deliciously glazed. This place is clearly not a one dough-note wonder! The other baked goods are fair game in my book!
I went during their very first week and decided that, for my figure, I should not go often, though I’m feeling the itch to stop on Tuesday on my way back to school. I liked that they were not filling their wall with donuts quiet yet. They know business and they were cautiously baking to provide just enough donuts to build a following. I will say, that with autumn about, an apple cider or pumpkin donut would be a fantastic edition to their arsenal. Make sure to check them out!
