In the stacks at the Windham Public Library - By Jen Alvino Leo

This time of year you are probably reading all sorts of Best of 2013 lists. I thought I would share my list with you. These are my favorite books that I read in 2013:

And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
If you have read and enjoyed Hosseini’s other novels, you will enjoy this one just as much. It is less traumatic than his first two books but still has sadness woven throughout the chapters. This book is about a family’s relationships and how decisions can affect a family for generations. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character.  Hosseini expertly intertwines their stories to tell the tale of the bonds of family and how devastating loss can be.

Following Atticus: Forty-eight high peaks, one little dog and an extraordinary friendship by Tom Ryan
This book details newspaperman Tom Ryan’s desire to pay tribute to a friend. He attempts to climb all 48 4,000-foot peaks in New Hampshire twice in one winter with his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, for charity. Through their quest readers learn the true meaning of friendship and family and how both man and dog find love and redemption.

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
This novel is the story of a man, Tom Sherbourne, and his wife, Isabel, who live as lighthouse keepers on the remote Janus Rock in Australia. Tom and Isabel have difficulty conceiving a child and while grieving her most recent loss Isabel hears a baby cry. Tom and Isabel discover a boat washed ashore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Their decision to keep the child rather than report it not only calls their moral code into question but has devastating effects that they learn of later in the story when they move to the mainland.
The library owns each of these titles. Stop in to the library to check them out or chat with one of the librarians to find out other titles that might interest you. I look forward to seeing you in the library soon.
