Rarks and Rec 2014 winter outdoor fun in Windham

There are lots of opportunities in Windham for outdoor fun this year including snow shoeing, skating, sledding or just a winter walk. The ice skating area at the Manchester School is available for open skating. Hours on weekends are from dawn to 9 p.m. and during the week after school until 9 p.m. Ice conditions are dependent on the weather so please call Windham Parks and Recreation Department at 892-1905 for updates.

The Parks and Recreation Department has snow shoes for all ages to lend out free of charge to Windham residents. Just sign them out at the Parks and Recreation Office located in the Town Hall, 8 School Road. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

At the Lowell Preserve try snow shoeing or cross country skiing on one of the loop trails. The lower trails have been groomed for a great experience for all ages. It’s a great place to take a one hour hike or a half day excursion into the woods. There are 300 acres to explore. Trail maps are available at the Parks and Recreation Office or on the Town’s website at www.windhammaine.us . There is also a small sledding hill at the Lowell Preserve in back of the fire station. Parking is available at the parking lot beside the fire station. Cross country skiing is also allowed on the trails.

The Mountain Division Trail is open during the winter months for walking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. Please be aware that the trail is also a snow mobile trail, so please watch for snowmobilers.

A family sledding party will be held at the Lowell Preserve sledding hill on Saturday January 18th from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Windham Parks and Recreation Department. The sledding hill is off Falmouth Road just behind the fire station.

Come join in for some winter fun with tubing races, candy hunt in snow, a bonfire and free hot cocoa. We will have snow shoes to try out so you can take a short hike on the trails.  Tubes for the tube races will be provided for all ages starting at 1 p.m.

To reserve a spot for all the treats and activities please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 892-1905 by January 16th.  Lack of snow date will be Saturday, February 1.

Please wear the proper clothing, bring extra water and a cell phone. Not sure of what the conditions are of these areas please contact the Windham Parks and Recreation Department at 892-1905, Monday through Thursday. Enjoy your Windham natural resources and have some outdoor winter fun in your hometown.
