The annual Windham Summerfest Event will be celebrated again this year on Saturday, June 23^rd on the Windham High School campus.  Summerfest has been a wonderful family-fun event that welcomes in summer for Windham residents and this year’s fest is no different.  In fact, it has a few more collaborative additions that go with the event’s slogan, “Bringing Unity to the Community.”

Robin Mullins, co-chair of the Summerfest organizing committee (a role she shares with Deb Matthews), has been involved in making the yearly event happen for the past six years.  “I’m really excited about this year’s event and for many reasons,” stated Mullins.  “First, the Town of Windham is much more involved. Our committee, appointed by the Town Council and overseen by Linda Brooks, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, has been coordinating every detail of the event. Linda has acted as the liaison for the town providing administrative and logistical assistance that landed in volunteers’ laps in previous years. Kelsey Crowe, administrative assistant, has also played an important role in handling all the registrations.”

But what makes this year different than previous years, is the fact that the community is coming together and providing a variety of activities that were not present before, making Summerfest 2018 a more inclusive event. “This year, we have more people and non-profit organizations joining in,” Mullins said. “For example, Summerfest will start off with the Toby Pennels 5k. The Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Feed the Need Yard Sale and we have added a Crafter/Vendor Village and a Business Spotlight to this year’s event.”

Summerfest attendees can also look forward to: the annual Duane Clark Car Show, the parade, led by this year’s Grand Marshal, WHS Vice Principal, Deb McAfee, awesome entertainment all day long, a Business Expo, a variety of food options offered by area non-profits and eight GIANT inflatables for kids of all ages, sponsored by the Refuge Church. Camp Sunshine will be there with tons of family fun games, and Zack Conley of Modern Woodmen will be presenting this year’s Hometown Hero Award. The day will end at dusk with the most amazing fireworks display, put on by Central Maine Pyrotechnics. 

“I’m so excited about this year’s Summerfest,” exclaimed Mullins. “There is going to be so much more available for the whole family and we’ve done it without adding a lot of work to the volunteers. Not only that - there are more non-profits involved so they will be able to raise much needed funds. It is a real win-win. It is truly a ‘unity for the community’ summer event.”
