When
my son told my daughter that she looked like a “big, blue car” when he was
four, he meant it as a compliment. Last week my friend’s husband told me I was
starting to look like surfboard…I don’t know about that, but I took that as a
compliment. You have to take them where they come…and so far on my journey,
they are only coming from those who know.
Three
weeks ago, The Windham Eagle partnered with Mend-A-Body Solutions to try out
their weight loss program for six months. I was nervous, especially after talking
to the owner and creator, Debra Ann St. Hilaire Sellinger. It sounded so
restrictive and had more food items we couldn’t have, but I decided that I need
to take this opportunity, so I cut out the soda and the bread and the pasta. I
learned that there are alternatives to my favorite foods and better choices I
can make. After a few weeks, I noticed that my shirts fit better and the scale
moved in the right direction. I was no longer snacking on bags of candy. The
plan worked into my life easily and I don’t miss the bread at all. There have
been days where I craved Devil Dogs, but I have to tell myself “no”. During the
last week, I’ve found that stress is not good for weight loss and that if you
don’t plan, there will be a problem.
I’m
ready to commit to this challenge, even though putting our progress out there
is a huge risk for all three of us. We hope you will follow us on these pages
as we struggle and succeed on our journey.

I
have had a really hard time losing weight and getting to a place where I feel
comfortable and able to play with my children, wakeboard, and live a healthy
life since my second child was born 11 years ago. After having two more
children 8 years ago it has even been more difficult with schedules,
businesses, and overall life that we all encounter every day. When I learned
about Mend-A-Body years ago at a networking event I was intrigued as I was told
it wasn’t a diet… it’s more of an education, however felt I was too busy to do
anything at that time. A few more years passed and now, in a place of wanting
to lose weight with two other people we decided to accept The Mend-A-Body
Program as a challenge to The Windham Eagle Newspaper. Now, don’t get me wrong…I
have dieted, I have tried diet pills, I have exercised, I have bought videos, etc.
and I seem to hate all of them after just a few days. My schedule doesn’t allow
going somewhere weekly to get weighed in, classes that need to be attended,
special shopping or regular exercise. If you know me, you know we live a very crazy life and I was worried I
wouldn’t be able to do this either. Now, no lies… week one is hard but as the
education continues you learn how to eat, what to eat, what to avoid, and how
to incorporate these guidelines in your everyday life. I have learned to like
certain vegetables (I have never eaten vegetables, except carrots, prior to
doing this). I am excited with my 12 pound loss and look forward to continuing
this. Now that my entire town knows I’m doing this… I have to stick to it, and
will stick to it. It is a healthy way to bring up our children.

I
have struggled with weight my entire life. Even in high school while playing
two sports five days a week and working out at the gym I was still 6’1” and 250
pounds. I was a heavy eater as a teen and into my twenties. I always stayed
busy doing outside work and maintained a low blood pressure and shockingly good
physical exams despite being obese. During my thirties I started to be so busy
in my life style, with four kids, that I would skip breakfast and even
sometimes lunch. I would more than make up for it at dinner. I tried diet
pills, Atkins, NutriSystem, low carb, no carb, grapefruit and any other diet
out there but none worked long term. I grew to a high of 350 pounds before
deciding that I did not want my weight to control my life anymore. I made a
commitment to eating healthy and sticking to a new “Healthy Living Plan”
designed by Mend-A-Body and I have never felt better. I spend the summers on
the lake watching my kids wakeboard and do flips and jumps and I remember the
days when I could have done that but was afraid of peers making fun of me so I
didn’t try. Now at 37 years old I am doing those things and plan to do even
more in the future. Mend-A-Body has given me new hope for a lasting healthy
lifestyle that I can live. If you have tried diet pills, diet plans, or just
cold turkey, forget it! All the things we are told by the diet companies are
not long term maintenance information. They are just quick fixes so you feel
good and buy more of their products. The information I have learned in just three
weeks has changed all my eating habits and explained why I failed so many
times. I can’t wait to see what they teach me next week.
