Windham Primary School music teacher, Nancy Cash-Cobb, was presented the Educator of the Year Award for the American Legion Post 148 at the Memorial Day Open House at the Windham Veterans Center on Monday, May 29. At the presentation she was also told that she was named Educator of the Year for the Department of Maine American Legion for the entire State of Maine.
Cash-Cobb has been teaching for 38
years, 36 of them in Windham.
“My key goal in life is to put smiles on
kids’ faces. The second is to teach music,” Cash-Cobb said.
In her acceptance speech at the Memorial
Day Open House, she talked about her experience with the American Legion
Auxiliary. “When I was seven I used to sell poppies on the steps of the Portland
Post Office on Memorial Day,” she told the audience. “I’d ask them ‘Would you
like to wear a poppy?’ At the end of the day, I always had the most money.” Supporting
Veterans is in her blood.
To be recognized by the organization
that she has been a part of for most of her life meant a lot, she said. “I grew
up in a post home,” said Cash-Cobb. Her mom was a lifetime member and paid dues
for Cash-Cobb even when she wasn’t attending meetings regularly.
Cash-Cobb is a member of American Legion
Auxiliary Unit 148.
“I wish my mom was still around. She’d
be so proud.”
