Field-Allen Post 148 in Windham, Maine,
(Windham’s best kept secret), is having its October 2016 membership drive. Our
goal this year is to attract younger service members from our community to join
the post, a post who has and continues to achieve State-wide recognition and awards.
Whether you are looking for veteran support, want to talk to fellow veterans
who have similar combat experiences, or just want to hang out and talk, Post
148 is for you. As an incentive to join, a free one year membership will be
granted to new members during the Month of October 2016, so don’t delay.
The American Legion was chartered by
Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to
veterans, service members and communities, the American Legion evolved from a
group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential non-profit
groups in the United States. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million
members in 14,000 posts worldwide.
The purpose of the American Legion is to
serve veterans and their families. We also provide numerous social events for veterans
and their families, present scholarships such as the Oratorical Contest, Boys
and Girls State Dirigo programs, and coordinate the town’s Memorial Day events.
Finally, we provide cemetery wreath laying for deceased Veterans through the December
Everlasting Gratitude Program.
The Post meets the first Wednesday of
every month at the Windham Veterans Center on Veteran’s Memorial Drive, located
behind Hannaford in North Windham. The post has a 5 p.m. social hour and free
supper hour, followed by a 6 p.m. business meeting.
