Quilters
and quilt aficionados are invited to view an exquisite and unusual display this
Sunday, April 24 at Windham Friends Church. One
Woman’s Quilts is an eclectic collection of colorful, creative quilts
created by Windham’s Helen Plummer (1922-2015).
Daughter
Becky Delaware said that her mother began knitting, crocheting and sewing as a
4-H teenager in the 1930s. Helen raised a family with her husband, Bill, and later
became a teacher. She resumed crafting and experimented with different
materials and non-traditional designs. Spurred by creative energy and a desire
to maintain an active mind, Mrs. Plummer renewed her earlier skills and
experimented with different fabrics and designs. She used upholstery, wool,
velour, double-knit and denim material. Some quilts contain flour bag cloth.
One was quilted with sugar bags.
Sunday’s
display, created over a 20 year period, features 41 quilts, tops, coverlets and
hangings. The unique collection will be on display from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at
Friends Meeting House on Gray Road across from the Windham Food Pantry/Clothes
Closet. The event is sponsored by the Windham Historical Society. Donations are
welcome.
