At the library - By Sally Holt at the Raymond Village Library

Maine writers are important to the literary fabric of the state. They bring the cultural voice of Maine to the world. And one of the great gifts a library can present to the public is scheduling opportunities for authors to visit and present their writings.

According to the book Maine: A Guide Downeast, the first important book about Maine written by a native of the state was Sarah Orne Jewett’s (1849-1909). Country of the Pointed Firs is a landmark book in the so-called local color movement in American Literature.

Edward Arlington Robinson (1869-1935), recognized as one of America’s foremost poets, was for many years Maine’s outstanding writer.

Maine’s own Stephen King is recognized as one of the most famous and successful horror writers of all time.

And right here in Raymond, Maine, Ernest H. Knight (1905-2007) is probably best known as the most prolific writers on the history of Raymond, Maine. Some of his book titles include Raymond, Then and Now Books I and II, The Origin and History of Raymondtown and Historical Gems of Raymond and Casco.

On April 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m, the Board of Trustees of the Raymond Village Library is hosting a fundraiser with, internationally known suspense author, Tess Gerritsen. There will be refreshments and specially recorded music chosen by the author during the book signing. Tickets to this event are $15 (cash or check) and must be purchased prior to this evening. Since seating is limited, we request those planning to attend to pre-register by calling the Raymond Village Library at 655-4283 or email sally.holt@raymondvillagelibrary.org.  A drawing of assorted, signed books by the author will be held that evening. All proceeds benefit the library.
